roman matres 2nd centuryThe matres statue has been crafted after a 2nd century original excavated in Gaul. It is now part of the collection of Muse d'Argentomagnus in France. The Matres (Latin 'Mothers') were goddesses worshipped across North and West Europe from the 1st to the 5th century AD. They are usually depicted in groups of three upon votive stones and altars. Half of the divine names are Celtic, whilst the other half is Germanic. They were also worshipped in regions
