The honey coloured material is a tagua nut from the South American ivory nut palm which can be carved and turned when new but hardens over time

The boxes are made of rosewood with inlaid Tunbridge roundels set into the lids which just pull off

The pierced steel plate is stamped 'Depose Paris' meaning the design was protected
