Due to its incredibly vivid and deep coloration
The “Benz” part of the name comes from the tip of some calcite crystals which have a clearly defined three-pointed star of pyrite

These pieces of cuboidal fluorite crystals in varying shades of dark green occur on a high contrast white-gray matrix
The spectacular display of colors these specimens display can be formed by two different geological processes: the oxidation of pyrite causing ultra-thin layers of iron oxide to form on the surface
with color intensity usually deepest at the termination or tip of each crystal
Each contains at least one (most several) clearly visible insect
It has a very dramatic "head shield" which is often interpreted as a mechanism to help it stay on top of a soft ocean floor
A widespread and industrially important mineral
the so-called “Benz” calcite comes from specific formations in Hubei
where some truly impressive specimens like this very rarely emerge from the mines
resulting from the oxidation of its copper and sulfide components
