Very Rare Antique Sino Japanese War 1895 Siege of Weihaiwei DishThis is a very rare antique Japanese military commemorative dish, decorated with a picture of Japanese sailors in the foreground attacking and celebrating the sinking of enemy ships, and the ship sinking in the distance is Pingyuan (as noted by the flag). Pingyuan was an ironclad of the Chinese Beiyang Fleet that was stationed in Weihaiwei during the siege after the defeat at the Battle of Yalu River, and was captured after the Japanese took the city.

The soldier's name Karatsu is on the back

Condition: Excellent - very light fading of the colours

which suggests that this is probably a dish from the 30s

This is probably to celebrate the Anglo-Japanese alliance signed in 1906

The words on the back are "70th Infantry Leaving the Service Commemoration" and the soldier's name Okada

The words on the exterior are "Great Japanese Wounded Soldier Association Tokyo Area Kyobashi District Branch Association"

These are usually meals given to soldiers for some commemorating event - Imperial Guards get it when they leave

This was a cup for someone who just turned 70 and he was probably born the year the lords gave up their land

Condition: Excellent - light discoloration of the gold
