Its a semaphore railway signal, a visual display device used to control the movement of trains through the rail network.. but the brooch has an added layer of meaning. The signal is set to proceed remember those traffic light parties where you would wear a different colour badge to let potential suitors know whether you were single available, taken, or undecided? I think this is a 1920s spin on that

it's set with two vivid purple amethysts and built in 9ct yellow gold

with a section of 22ct gold added
