The lid is set with a painted paper cut out of a house and gardens by a river arranged to give a 3D effect and set against a painted sky with birds. Inside is a typed paper from the previous owner indicating it is likely to be a late piece from Narcissa Niblack Thorne's workshop. She was a wealthy American philanthropist who was known

The honey coloured material is a tagua nut from the South American ivory nut palm which can be carved and turned when new but hardens over time
