Antique Japanese Military Eagle Red Cross Medic Army Sake CupThis is an antique Japanese military sake cup, decorated with a red cross being carried by an eagle. There's a poem on the exterior with the name of the kiln Kutani in the base. The Red Cross association before WW2 was closely allied with the Japanese military. Condition: Mint Size: 2" across

I have a few of these so there are slight variations in the way the cup looks

maybe even the late 30s

and the other is the national flag the Hinomaru

The maker's mark for Shobido is on the back

decorated with a chrysanthemum and a kiri

One is the flag with rays

decorated with a helmet

There's a star on the map of Hokkaido

and you know this because the event commemorated is the special naval exercise fleet review

The chrysanthemum and kiri are both symbols of the imperial house

The words under the tower are "North China Patrol Commemoration" and on the ribbon "14th Destroyer Squadron" - quite possibly a reference to the initial attack on China in 1937 when it was referred to as the "North China Incident"
