Milo and the Lion

Milo and the LionA black and white print of Pierre Puget's Milo of Croton (1682) the French Baroque sculptor's signature marble, and one of the most dramatic sculptures in the Louvre. The aged wrestler Milo, having thrust his hand into a split tree trunk to pry it apart, is caught when the wood snaps shut on him; a lion pads up from behind, teeth already at his thigh. The story comes from Greek legend: Milo of Croton was the most celebrated wrestler of the 6th century
