The lid and base are decorated with a gilt textured effect. The lid lifts to reveal an excellent mirror which gives a perfect reflection. All clasps & hinges work perfectly. The manufacturers included a tiny hole in the base of this compact to facilitate the easy removal of powder pans. If any powder pan was stuck a pin pushed through this hole

The interior sterling silver still retains the original gilding too
