WT #23, Hollow Form Vessel from Catalpa

WT #23, Hollow Form Vessel from CatalpaCatalpa Void Form, 9 T x 9. 5W. Hole in top 2 1 16. Mineral oil, beeswax, and CA finish. I recovered this wood when they were remodeling a business lot in Grand Junction and removed 3 very old Catalpa trees with trunks that were 3 foot in diameter.

Finished with walnut oil to 50

This is the largest piece I have ever turned and the most challenging

The tree died as a result of the 2018 Bull Draw Fire on the Uncompahgre Plateau

5” diameter with 1/4” wall thickness

He told me it was quite rare and upon further research I discovered that it is indeed extremely rare and since about 2005 only small pieces a matter of inches long can be purchased … primarily for use by pen makers and knife makers for handle scales

This is a very large piece that came from an old sycamore stump that had been laying out in our desert climate for about 7 years after it had been cut by a neighbor of mine

This piece was from the base of the root ball of an ancient ponderosa pine that was logged off on the Uncompahgre Plateau over one hundred years ago

with a diamond buffed cyanoacrylate finish
