In 1900 he was officially named the first flutist of the Imperial Opera, one of the most sought after positions in the Tsarist Empire. In St. Petersburg he had the opportunity to devote himself increasingly to composition. The salon piece "Papillon" Op. 30 No. 4 was so popular that it was recorded in 1910 for the Victor Talking Machine Company in New York
