A Fine Large 'Lund' Chess Set, circa 1830A Fine Antique English 'Lund Pattern' Ivory Chess Set or Large Size, circa 1830 one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings surmounted with large Maltese crosses, queens with feather finials, bishops with open mitres, knights with horse's heads, rooks as turrets with battlements, pawns with reeded ball finials, in a 19th century inlaid wooden casket, with a brass mounted 'shield' on the lid King: 12. 2cm high, base diameter: 3. 7cm wide
with attractive foliate gilt-tooling to the borders
stamped: "PORTABLE B
one side in a darker-coloured wood
the borders with neo-Rococo C-scrolls in blue enamel
kings and queens with scalloped galleries
with green felt baizes to the underside of the chessmen
the folding board with a double spine resembling a book
the black lacquered wooden case with a sliding lid to the front (inscribed with Chinese Characters and flowers) and a brass handle to the top
1909- named after King Edward VII's horse which famously won the Epsom Derby in that year
