The plants can be purple during winter dormancy or times of stress but is otherwise blueish green normally

It will go completely dormant in the summer and die down to the soil

I don't know of another cactus like it

When young (as they are now) they seem like a regular green cactus but once it gets big enough the main plant stops growing but produces a large hairy inflorescence that continues to grow for the rest of the life of the plant
