Nisin

NisinNisin is a polypeptide antibiotic known as a lantibiotic. It has been isolated from Lactococcus lactis. Produced by gram positive bacteria, the role of nisin is to reduce competitive strain due to the presence of other gram positive bacteria. When it comes in contact with other gram positive bacteria, nisin creates pores in the cell membrane leading to loss of membrane permeability control. This ultimately leads to cell lysis and death.
