Vilhelm Holmgren, The Artist’s WifeA colourful Summertime scene depicting the artists wife sunbathing by Vilhelm Holmgren (1863 1943). Its a beautifully captured candid moment full of effortless joy. We love the way Holmgren has rendered the dappled shadows on Jeannes legs as the light passes through the branches. The short broken marks are reminiscent of the French impressionists. Its interesting to consider whether Holmgren painted some of this outside while enjoying a relaxed day

The beige areas you can see are paint rather than paint loss and the white area at the bottom is intentional

Yet his portfolio is often overlooked in favour of his contemporaries

Christ is dressed in red and white robes and bears several marks from his crucifixion

This fascinating little study captures the subject’s character with skill and sensitivity
